I had read about a mountain bike hut trip from Telluride, CO to Moab, UT and told Jeff about it. He told his friend Jon, and next thing we knew the three of us had signed up for it. The trip was about 215 miles in 7 days of riding. Each night we stayed in a hut that was stocked with food and sleeping bags. All we needed to carry was our clothes, spare parts, tools, and a sleeping bag liner.

Jeff and I drove to Moab from Ridgecrest on the 3rd, and Jon met us there from Boulder. We left Jeff's car there and drove to Telluride on the 4th. We explored the area, treated Jeff to a birthday dinner, and watched the fireworks that night. On Saturday, the 5th, we loaded up our bikes and started the long journey to Moab. The huts hold up to 8 people, but it turns out there were only two others in our group, for a total of 5. We all ended up riding together most of the time. Some days were tough, some were a little more relaxing, but it was all a whole lot of fun!

TELLURIDE TO LAST DOLLAR HUT
10 MILES | 2,000 FT ASCENT | 550 FT DESCENT

Main Street in Telluride on Sunday.

This is a view of the Telluride Airport from the top of the gondola at the ski area. We decided that would be the best place to leave Jon's car for the following week. And it conveniently cut off a couple miles and around 1,000 ft of elevation gain for the first day.

Make sure you don't catch more than 4 kids. I caught a 14 year old. Had to throw him back...

The night before we started our ride, we made a mess trying to decide what tools and spare parts to bring.

Me, Jon, and Jeff in the parking lot at the airport ready to start our ride on Saturday. The first day's ride took us into the mountains behind us.

We met up with the other two in our group, Alex and Chad from Atlanta, a couple miles into the 10 mile 2,000 ft climb to the first hut. We're making our way up to the Last Dollar Hut.

Me on the way up to the hut.

Working on our bikes at the Last Dollar Hut. We decided a little preventative maintenance would go a long way and spent some time each evening keeping the bikes in the best condition we could.

Chad modeling the toilet. It wasn't exactly the most luxurious, but you can't beat the view.

The hut was well stocked with canned food, and fresh food in the cabinets. We used the oven attached to the wood burning stove to make pizza for dinner.

Bunks inside the hut.

The hut was at 11,000 ft, and the view was amazing. We ate chips and salsa while we enjoyed the scenery and sun set from our stumps that evening.
